SOPHISTICATED & EXPEDITIOUS PROJECT DESIGN REALIZATION

PROJECT CONCEPT
'66 Sketch
Architect's Tablet
Conceptual studies offer an architect's first thoughts in rendering the client's project criteria. Form Relation Language and Purpose begin to materialize. Concept studies can be numerous, though the first usually offer the most creative broad-brush strokes in painting the architect's overall impression.
SWISS MISS ENTRY
'96 Sketch
Menomonie WI
Corporate operations in direct relation to product processes often act to stimulate the architect's creativity. This project was focused on campus wayfinding and with particular emphasis on Entry. What better way to express this than to magnify the foil-flying product capping process into public view. Makes me think - "Pudding!"
BUS STOP SHELTER
'96 Sketch
Ottumwa IA
An iconic neoclassical style Fidelity Savings Bank building backboards this concept study bus stop at Market and Main. Architect, H. H. Stoddard's terra cotta clad structure sets the design table for a durable and elementary structure and in respect of it's historic neighbor. Considerable consideration is given to even this simplest of structures such to offer relational context and compliment.

From concept the design progresses toward greater definition. The architect establishes spatial relations in hierarchical context. Form Dimension and Placement are tested with respect to the design program's set criteria. This process often includes sustainable goals. Jurisdictional requirements are dovetailed in this phase of design. The ultimate result renders the architect's first impression of spaces hallmarked as key to the overall design and with sequential value - purposeful expression and meaning.

SANCTUARY

The schematic plan is spirited by the architect's imagination - linked to the third dimension as well as the human senses. An example: Cathedrals are inspiring in their uplifting form and articulate structure. In their presence, seemingly it is proportion alone that reaches our humbled being. Scale alone is only the palette, as the architect's intricate relational weave will render a unique building fabric. Relations of building to site, street to entry, sanctuary to chancel, alter to assembly, daylight to interior, and ultimately, acoustic to occupant are only a few of the many factors that foster religious faciities design.
ASSEMBLY MULTI-PURPOSE

Broad stroke renderings help the architect to convey scale and proportion to the client. In the architect's office many concept sketches are tossed aside until one particular rendering surfaces to embody the character of the project design. The building sketch may be rendered to emit color and texture, furthering a relational context and previewing an actual construction material palette. Sometimes a trashed rendering, with folds and crinkles offer the architect even more perspective of imagery. It is not uncommon that a trashed sketch becomes THE final design.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

Middle/Senior High Cornell, WI
The collective design consists not only of drawings but more importantly of materials of various products, size and attachment. Details developed by the architect entail relational testing of scale. Engineering warrants the structural and functional performance of products in relation to forces applied my numerous sources - wind, snow, water, people, animals, vehicles, and earth. Calculations performed in context with the overall design accompany documents to be submitted to jurisdictions having authority for permits required prior to construction. Sketches are of great importance in conveying at an early stage the intent of the design and in levying best design engineering solutions in complement of both design and budget.

CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTATION
'07 Wall Sections
Ammerman Residence
Finalizing a design involves merging engineering and product specification into documentation worthy of the owner's initial design criteria. The construction documentation is essentially a "kit of parts" attending to all aspects of design needed to execute the plan. Building and wall sections indicate relation of products and assemblies to adjacent materials and construction. Conflicts are attended to by adjustment or even reverse design to resolve issues that would otherwise create added construction effort and cost to the project.

'07 Details
Ammerman Residence
"God is in the Details." was spoken by one of the most influential architects in the mid 1900's, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. There is justification to this saying. Where questions are left unasked, there exists answer's void. Construction efforts around the world and for centuries have relied on the language of construction documentation to convey the very minute detail necessary for the execution of contracts for construction. Initial costing exercises are futile if a contractor has little or no definition of the clients needs. Oh, yes, there are projects built without architects designs. They are easy to find. The same is true of projects lead by an experienced design professional. They are easily recognized and of far greater value.
